what i won't miss about retail (part 1)

DISCLAIMER: this post is not about any particular retail company. it is what i have learned/ observed/ experienced at 14+ years at XX, 7 intermittent years throughout college and post graduation at XX, kinda remember as a seasonal one year in college at XX, and barely remember for about a month at XX (bc i thought i could do 2 jobs at the same time and at the time i couldn't) these are my opinions about the retail experience and are not 100% based on one company

so when i gave my 2 week notice i started joking around about how i wasn't going to miss this or that. then when i decided that i was going to start the blog again a decided that i was going to have a feature (or several) about what i wasn't going to miss about retail.

before i left i decided that the #1 thing i wasn't going to miss was the music. and while this was decided based  on the awesome music i got to listen to on a daily basis  it is not solely based on that job.
i have several issues with the music.

first of all- the playlists are WAAYYYY to short, you can hear the same song at least 4-5 times in an 8 hour shift.

next- WHAT ARE THESE CRAPPY SONGS THEY PLAY? i mean i get it you have to appeal to the younger crowd with all the top 40 poppy crap. but some of this other shit?!?!? wtf is this?? ok, i understand that as a 40 year old woman my musical tastes may have peaked in the 90s, but once upon a time we played good music we could sing along to. honestly ever since i went back from maternity leave the music makes me want to kill someone.  powers that be, i get that you are trying to have fun/ funny poppy ( or poopy as my typo wanted to be) music, but think of your employees. if you want us to provide excellent customer service ( as is the goal of most retail companies) then maybe you should consider  us. we are the ones that have to listen to the shit you put on all day. non stop. maybe you could make a playlist that is the length of a full time employees shift, instead of not even half the length of a part time employees shift. I'm just sayin...hearing the same song 6 or 7 times in a shift makes me really cranky, and when i'm cranky the last think i want to do is pretend to be nice to some asshole customer! ( see my first reason above) this even happens with the songs i do like

also we should get a choice. maybe more than one station? we used to get that once upon a time. don;t know why it ever went away. maybe it was to expensive??

and also during the holiday season it's all christmas all the time. and keep in mind for retail employees holiday season starts november first which means all holiday all the time for 2 solid months. argh! shoot me know!! as a kid i would find and hide  my mom's christmas tapes (yes cassette tapes) just before thanksgiving bc i hated christmas music even then.

a final thought on why i won't miss the music- i won't wake up with the crappy music on repeat in my head!! i mean isn't it bad enough that i would hear the same songs so so so many times at work to have it continue in my head is enough to drive me bonkers. now it least i have old school sesame street on repeat in my head (current song is i love trash by oscar the grouch)

Side note..i wrote this a few days ago and forgot to hit publish... well at least I hit save this time. I'm getting better!
