garden time!
oh so before i head out to the garden for some garden time, i owe anyone who may actually read this a little hello...
hi!
ok, i'm going now
jk.....
but seriously, the past few months have been a little busy for me. got a promotion at work!! which meant the training process and a whole new location, oh and lots more responsibility which of course means less time.
and then there's the house... you saw we started the kitchen (i swear i'll put up after pics for the kitchen and maybe even someday the bathroom..its just a matter of remembering to take pictures after i've cleaned the house bc generally after i've finished cleaning taking pictures is not the first thing on my mind..) and you saw the no-longer-there front porch. we'll in between that i've been cleaning up the house and mess, mowing the lawn, and generally doing the yard work. i figure if the mister can build i can garden... i've got to have my dad's and grandfather's green thumb in there some where...right?
well anywho...a few weeks ago we were discussing starting a garden..like with vegetables, not the roses that grow in socal without me even having to do anything to them... so we decided to start a raised bed that the mister was going to build for me!!!!
attempt one wasn't sturdy enough. the mister decided to use some of the leftover pvc wainscoting from the bathroom (i swear, i swear!! bathroom afters will someday be posted!). it looked cool, but wasn't sturdy or even tall enough. and since my hands were muddy, no pic.
so plan B...which of course meant yet another trip to home depot..aka home away from home...and i got the stand there in the lumber isle while he hunted for the perfect size of lumber, then go through each piece and eyeball it to make sure it was level and up to his standards... did i mention there is barely any service in home depot so i can't go on the interwebs? and i get yelled at for facebooking in home depot bc i should be appreciating the manly-ness of eyeballing lumber to check for its standards and such. sigh.
so we got the perfect lumber. up next...plants or seeds?
so we went to a nursery...big trouble.
we didn't really go with a plan. we just wandered. and picked up plants. and wandered some more. and picked up more stuff.... then we looked at trees. i want an orange tree. we have a grapefruit, which is nice and all, but oranges are more multi-purpose. no such luck. orange-quest continues another day. so then we headed to check out. oh wait they have seed packets next to check out. let's buy some seeds too. oh yeah and we need dirt to fill our raised beds.
so we get home. he builds the beds. i try to figure out what it going where. i plant it. and it look like this
all right so let's break this down bed by bed...
this is the one on the right. the back row is 3 different types of tomatoes. we just couldn't decide on one.
the next row is swiss chard plants that the mister had already had in a container and never transplanted. they had actually started to root through the bottom of the container, hence their sad droopy-ness.
in front of the chard we have planted seeds of soy beans.
then a row of arugula plants.
then a row of chinese kale seeds, with the potted basil sitting on top until i figured out where to put it.
then the final front row left to right is italian parsley, rosemary and chocolate mint.
good gravy that's a lot!!
but wait there's more....bed #2
on to the left bed...
in the back row we have red bell peppers, pole beans, and yet another tomato.
in front of that is 2 broccolini's and a crook nose squash.
then 2 more broccolini's and some beets.
then the final 2 broccolini's and a brussel sprout.
in front of that we have spinach seeds and carrots seeds.
and the front row is an artichoke and some onion seeds.
if it all grows we're in big trouble!
well stuff has started to sprout, but i'll write about that later. i'm off today and its nice out so i want to go play in the dirt!!
